Inspiration

My main inspiration for this project is Newsround. Newsround is a News website aimed at children, aged 5–17-year-olds. It makes the news understandable but still looks at important events such as politics. There is also a somewhat large amount of representation on Newsround as there are presenters of different backgrounds and ages. Newsround also focuses on asking the children for their opinions on different stories rather than adults. There are also articles for children to read. During the Ukraine and Russia war, the website has been updated to include news on this but has also included articles that help children understand that it is okay to be upset by the news and ways of dealing with it.

As I focused on race and ethnicity representation during Unit 12, I wanted to find positive articles from this subject for my website. During Easter half term, I found a story about an 18-year-old Ukrainian refugee named Bohdan Bilokur. He had moved in with a man named Emmanuel Hemmings, in Coventry. Even though this story is based in Coventry, I believe this story is important. It is good to see these stories are making the news, but this story didn’t get a follow up article or a mention on the ITV news website. Therefore I believe there is still need for improvement of representation of people from black and minority ethnic minorities and refugees in the news.
